On the Chamorro caste system

I had to relearn this stuff so here I’ll give you guys a refresher.

Chamorri - refers to the two upper classes of Chamorros

Matua - The highest caste of Chamorro society, these people lived in villages near the beach and were described as large, light-skinned, and practical royalty. They also had a fair knowledge of navigation since they were the ones going out to sea to fish for food. The Chamorros of the lowest caste had to bow down to these Chamorros and could not look them in the eye.

Atcha’ot - The middle caste of Chamorro society, these people also lived in optimal villages near the beach and, like the Matua, had to be bowed down to. Some of them could come from the lowest caste only if they did a great feat. Individuals of this caste could jump to the highest caste if they performed a great or honorable feat as well.

Mana’chang - The lowest caste of Chamorro society, these people lived inland where they had to grow their on food and could not get meat very often. They were described as darker and slightly smaller in stature than the upper-caste Chamorros. These people could not look people of higher caste in the eyes directly and had to bow when one of them approached. They also could not touch a beach or the water of the ocean because it was considered very bad luck for the upper-caste Chamorros. They supposedly could only jump rank to the middle class if they did something extremely great and honorable, but could not ever be a part of the Matua. However, it was not unheard of for a mana’chang to foster a Matua godchild, if the individual had saved the child’s life. It this happened, the godparent was granted higher esteem in the eyes of the Matua, though they may stay the same rank.

PLEASE, if you know more about this than me or find I am wrong feel free to correct me. I hope you enjoyed this mini-lesson in ancient chamorro society! If there’s anyhting else you’d like to know that I could help with submit something in my ask! Esta!

A little bit of vocabulary

Ma’gas (pronounce the first a like the o in ostrich) - King/chief/boss

Maga’lahi (pronounce the first a normally, 2nd a like above) - Governor/same as above but used strictly for males

Maga’haga (pronounce the first a in haga like the a in ma’gas) - Queen/female head of something like a family, business, etc.

Hands up if you knew what these words meant already and knew how to pronounce them.

You gotta miss the 5 dolla 5 choice!! Can never find a good deal like this on Guam or anywhere else. This shit is legit, the best part of Chamorro culture is that the food is always cheap (or free), and it works out because everybody else has to copy haha.

Hafadai New Followers!

Want to introduce yourself? New or old, the submit box is always open!

Also, All Soul’s Day is coming up. My family (when I stayed in Sa’i’pan) always drove around to the churches we go to the most and light candles, then we had a family gathering after the mass at the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery. Does your family have any traditions they keep on this holiday?
